- W151789580 abstract "The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) began using its three-coat bridge paint system to protect its steel structures in 1984. To date, coating failures have been minor and are generally noticeable within 2 years after the completion data. As the Department's work force began downsizing, MDOT began looking for an additional inspection tool to help eliminate the minor deficiencies and reduce the postcontract spot painting by MDOT maintenance crews. Performance warranties for bridge painting sounded like an answer. In theory, the use of a performance warranty on bridge painting contracts would encourage the proper cleaning and coating of the structural steel throughout the project. The deficiencies would show up under the warranty period and would be corrected by the contractor before final acceptance of the project. This article describes MDOT's initial trials with performance warranties from 1989 to 1996, which led to their full adoption in 1996. Although the warranty provision is not a replacement for good inspection, the MDOT and the regional Federal Highway Administration believe that the 2-year warranty is cost effective and has improved the overall quality and durability of field-applied bridge coatings in Michigan." @default.
