• W1518081750 abstract "This study examines the antecedents of job satisfaction,commitment and turnover intentions for 229 information systemsdevelopment personnel (ISDP) employed by nine companies withinseveral industries. The antecedents studied include boundaryspanning, role ambiguity and role conflict. A model of thesevariables is built and tested via path analysis. A secondaryanalysis is performed to explore the impacts of task differenceson the study variables. The task differences include analyticand programming tasks.The analyses revealed the following. Systems analysts spanmore boundaries than programmers. The major hazard faced bysystems analysts when they span boundaries is role conflict whichnegatively impacts their job satisfaction, commitment andintention to quit. The overall effect of boundary spanning is toreduce ISDP intention to quit despite its positive relationshipwith role conflict. Systems analysts and programmers are bothintolerant of role ambiguity. Role ambiguity is very detrimentalgreatly reducing ISDP job satisfaction, commitment and increasingISDP intention to quit. Role ambiguity is not related toboundary spanning nor is it related to analytic or programmingduties. Programmers are less committed than systems analysts andare more likely to express intentions to leave.The above information is used to make recommendations to ISmanagement.
