- W1518893609 abstract "Gae Anderson, Tivoli King: Life of Harry Richards, Vaudeville Showman (Sydney: Allambie, 2009) Harry Rickards was one of the 'big three' of Australian live theatre in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, and the first to have his life chronicled in a major biography. J.C. Williamson, who built his theatrical empire most obviously through lavish comic opera productions beginning with Gilbert and Sullivan, was given relatively short and superficial attention in Ian Dicker's early (1974) study and has been a preamble to two others (Tait, 1970; Tallis, 1999), while Bland Holt's spectacular melodramas have been analysed in numerous places but without much attention being paid to their creator. Both Williamson and Holt presented primarily narrative comedy-drama, leaving Rickards to contest the 'illegitimate' end of the market where by 1902 he achieved, albeit briefly, a dominant Australia-wide variety circuit with a long-term lease on a major theatre in every state capital, becoming the 'Napoleon of the Australian stage', as one supporter dubbed his conquering efforts (255). Rickards, who started as a singer of comic songs on the London stage and made several tours of the Australian colonies as an artist before becoming also an entrepreneur, is a wonderful subject for a biography, and Gae Anderson's detailed and thorough study, based on her 2006 PhD thesis at Sydney University, is a terrific if uneven attempt. She's chased down the details of obscure court cases which show him charged with and sometimes convicted for slander, obscenity, and abusive and violent behaviour; recorded family memoirs which tell entirely different and improbably sentimental happy family stories; located and reprinted the words of many of his now not very funny songs; chronicled each and every season one after another, year after year, with newspaper reviews quoted at length; and through all this tried to keep the reader aware of changing times, tastes and technologies - and concludes with the story of Rickards' Tivoli variety circuit in the decades after his death in 1911 through to its final collapse in 1966. Graeme Murphy's and the Australian BalletSydney Dance Company's 2001 centenary of Federation tribute, Tivoli, briefly renewed the memories, as did Frank van Straten's wonderfully informative, lavishly illustrated and large-format book, also Tivoli (Lothian, 2003). However, only the brief first chapter of van Straten's book deals with the Rickards years, so there was still plenty more to tell. Anderson's biography is very ambitious and delivers on the detail but, by contrast with van Straten's snappy and professionally presented volume, is very uneven and shows many of the signs of amateur desk-top publishing. Biography is a difficult genre and, as storytelling, 7ivo/z King coincidentally reminded me of Mrs Ramsay in To the Lighthouse, who could in successive moments think of her husband as a brute and as a god to be worshipped. But unlike Woolf s study of the fragmentary nature of conflicted human consciousness, here the juxtapositions seem often to be just an occasional inability to master and incorporate source material. For example, we are told in all seriousness that in San Francisco in 1870, after his wife's voice had failed her during a performance and 'she fled the stage in tears', 'Harry encouraged Carrie to sail back to Australia to recuperate. He promised to return to Sydney and collect her four months later, and take her home to London' (70). This section, presumably based on family stories, is allowed to stand without comment or explanation until, eight pages later, we find from the allegations made during Carrie's later action for divorce that he had beaten her repeatedly over at least a four-year period and once held a revolver to her head - and that at the time she had her on-stage breakdown he was sexually entwined with the troupe's leading gymnast, while she apparently also had a lover waiting to help her recuperate back in Australia. …" @default.
