- W1519165412 abstract "According to the ‘small baby syndrome hypothesis’, birth weight is claimed to show an inverse linear relation to later risk of type 2 diabetes. By looking into the literature 14 studies involving a total of 132,180 individuals can be identified of which, however, only seven displayed an inverse linear relation. Accordingly, meta-analysis of all published studies revealed that low birth weight is indeed associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (OR1.32, 95% CI: 1.06-1.64). However, high birth weight is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes to the same extent (OR1.27, 95% CI: 1.01-1.59). Metaregression showed a U-shaped relation between birth weight and subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes. Taken together, these findings indicate that the relation between birth weight and risk of type 2 diabetes later in life is not linear inverse, but U-shaped. Pathophysiological mechanisms and consequences for preventive medicine are discussed." @default.
