- W1519273410 abstract "AbstractIn this study I seek to evaluate the effect of music educationon the personal and social development of disturbed childrenand to ascertain the feasibility of incorporating suchteaching into the curriculum of EBD day schools. Apart fromthe author's own professional practice there was littleobservable practice and this, combined with the difficultiesof actually observing teachers working with disturbedchildren, placed restrictions on the scope of empirical study.Within this limitation, action research was combined withinterviews, case studies and questionnaires to determine theattitude of pupils to music.Analysis of the impact of music education on the behaviour ofdisturbed children indicates that it has some potential tobenefit their social and emotional readjustment and, at thesame time, demonstrates the marked effect of pupil behaviouron the curricular intentions of the teacher. It becomesapparent that it is not feasible to work within the confinesof a prescribed, developmental syllabus and that, whilst theoverall aim may be to encompass much of the mainstreamsyllabus, the inroads to that syllabus in this context will beapparently random reflecting the child's lack of sustainedconcentration and fleeting moments of interest. This changingemphasis brings about a re-evaluation of the concept of musicteaching and a comparison is made with music therapy in anattempt to discern which is the nearest model to therapeuticeducation.A retrospective view of general educational provision fordisturbed children includes consideration of causation, thespecial skills required of teachers and an analysis ofclassroom problems. Problems for the researcher working inthis field are diverse but in spite of the restraints, limitedfindings emerge which constitute the central focus of thisthesis - they being that music education can be successfullyincorporated into the curriculum of EBD day schools and thatit may positively effect the personal development and interpersonalrelationships between disturbed children. Thesefindings are central to the recommendations made for futureresearch and curricular development." @default.
