- W1519400892 abstract "Abstract Electron microscopical observations were made on the gonadotrophic (GtH) cells of the female sailfin molly during the monthly ovarian cycle. The cycle comprises oocyte growth (previtellogenic and vitellogenic), ovarian pregnancy, and parturition, and can be classified into 7 stages according to events in the ovary. The ultrastructural changes in the GtH cells indicate that GtH secretion is mainly or entirely confined to the period of vitellogenic oocyte growth (Stages 2–4), and also occurs in some fish during late pregnancy (Stage 7), in correlation with the resumption of vitellogenesis at that time in these individuals. The findings support previous results from hypophysectomy experiments on this species in suggesting that GtH is not essential for pregnancy and parturition, or for previtellogenic oocyte growth. Ultrastructural features of the GtH cells are discussed, including evidence that the hormone is released by exocytosis. GtH may also be stored in a nongranular form in the large cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, structures which characterise the GtH cells. The hormone may be released from the cisternae by diffusion across the cell membrane, without involvement of the Golgi apparatus." @default.
