- W1519439871 abstract "I HAVE looked through Joseph Price’s writings in the hope of finding some hint of the sea-change which our view of the nature and function of the amniotic fluid was to suffer. Not surprisingly, there is none. With occasional excursions into cranky beliefs, medical men have, from Hippocrates to Price, held to the view that the liquor amnii was a stagnant pool of urine wrapped protectively around the fetus. It is only recently that we have learned to think of the sea in which we were shaped as restless and ever changing ; a dynamic fluid to which many streams contribute and from which there are many outlets. There is little doubt that in late pregnancy fetal urine is a major component of the amniotic fluid, and the two are similar in many ways. At earlier stages of pregnancy liquor amnii resembles first maternal interstitial fluid and later fetal interstitial fluid.l Not only are many of the components of liquor turning over rapidly at any given time but also the origins of liquor change with advancing gestation and the composition changes gradually as the features of one source are superimposed on the other. There is some passage of material between liquor amnii and a number of other discrete compartments, notably fetal urine, fetal blood, maternal uterine and retroplacental blood, and, more remotely, maternal periph-" @default.
