In the orphan groups only a small percentage of termites are differentiated into soldiers and their differentiation is probably due both to the influence of the other members of the group and to influences sustained before their separation from the reproductives and soldiers. Soldiers are produced with much greater frequency when reproductives are present in the pseudergate groups, but varying according to whether one king, one queen, two reproductives of the same sex or a pair of reproductives are present. The effect of the reproductives can be graded as follows: pair of reproductives > two queens = one queen = two kings > one king.
