- W1520593040 abstract "Ei Horikoshi, Professor Emeritus at University of Toyama, passed away on 16 October, 2009, following a sudden heart attack at his home in Toyama city. He exerted a major influence on many geoscientists involved in the study of ore genesis and crustal evolution. Professor Horikoshi was born in Tokyo on 23 October, 1932, the first son of Dr Yoshiichi Horikoshi, who was also famous as a mining geologist. He studied the geology of the Besshi-type deposits of the Sazare mine, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, under the guidance of Professor Takeo Watanabe at the Geological Institute, University of Tokyo. He also worked on Kuroko deposits of the Hanaoka mine, Akita Prefecture, Japan, where he completed his dissertation thesis with distinction on the genesis of Kuroko deposits as syngenetic exhalative deposits associated with submarine volcanism. After completion, he studied massive sulfide deposits, tectonics, crustal evolution and others at Heidelberg University, Norwegian Institute of Technology, Kyushu University and University of Tokyo, and in 1978 became one of the founding professors at the Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Toyama. Throughout his career, he devoted his efforts to research and education at the University of Toyama. His hand-made, high-quality textbooks, together with his dedicated and warm-hearted approach to education endeared him to many students over the years. Both the fourth and fifth papers in this volume are contributed by his students. He was appointed as the Asian representative of the International Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits (IAGOD) in 1982 and became a Vice President of the Society for Geology Applied to Ore Deposits (SGA) in 1983, serving until 1988. The Kato Prize of the Society of Resource Geology was conferred on him in recognition of his contributions to geochemistry and economic geology. We shared the task of getting each of the high-quality contributions to this volume peer-reviewed, and acknowledge the dedicated efforts of the other many referees who generously contributed their time and professional expertise to bring this volume to fruition." @default.
