- W152079105 abstract "Small RNAs (sRNAs) gained the attention of every scientist at the latest in December 2002, when the journal Science published a special issue entitled ‘Small RNAs – Breakthrough of the Year’. However, at that time, small antisense RNAs in bacteria involved in the regulation of plasmid replication and maintenance, phage life cycle, and transposition had been investigated in great depth already for more than 20 years. Whereas for a long time sRNAs were discovered only fortuitously, systematic computer-based searches began in 2001. Currently, it is estimated that, for example, Escherichia coli genome encodes ≈200–300 sRNAs with diverse functions. To date, however, only about 80 sRNAs are known in this host. sRNAs can be classified into several major groups. They encompass cis- and trans-encoded base pairing sRNAs, sRNAs acting via protein-binding, sensory RNAs like RNA thermometers and riboswitches, but also sRNAs with other specific functions. The latter group is heterogenous and comprises tmRNA, part of a translation quality control system, ribonuclease P (RNase P), a ribozyme required for 5′ end maturation of tRNAs, and 4.5S RNA, a component of the prokaryotic signal recognition particle (SRP). This article summarizes our current knowledge on the biochemical properties of these RNAs, their mechanisms of action, and their biological functions." @default.
