In all optical networks, where packets are routed and/or switched in the optical domain, resolution for contention among packets inside the node or enroute to the same output port necessitates some type of buffering. Buffering in the optical domain is very limited and rather complex, if not nonexistent. This chapter provides an overview of the various optical contention resolution schemes in time, wavelength, and space domains. This is followed by a comparison of performance of these individual approaches and hybrid (including electro-optical) approaches.
