- W1521323508 abstract "ObjectivesThe objective of this review was to summarise the best available evidence on the effectiveness of music for hospital patients for reducing anxiety and pain, and for improving satisfaction, tolerance and mood.MethodsInclusion Criteria•Type of participants - adult hospital patients.•Type of interventions - the use of recorded music for a single episode of care.•Type of outcomes – anxiety, vital signs, pain, satisfaction, mood and tolerance.•Types of studies - randomised controlled trials.Search StrategyA comprehensive and systematic search was undertaken of electronic databases to identify both published and unpublished studies. Databases searched to identify published studies included Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, Expanded Academic Index, Austhealth, Psyclit, and Current Contents. Databases searched for unpublished studies included Dissertation Abstracts and ProceedingsFirst. Key journals were also hand searched.Assessment of ValidityAll identified studies that met inclusion criteria were assessed for methodological validity prior to inclusion in the review.Data CollectionData was collected from study reports using a data collection tool developed for this review.Data AnalysisStudies were summarised using both tabular and narrative summaries. When two or more comparable RCTs were identified the results were pooled in a meta-analysis to determine the effectiveness of music as an intervention. For dichotomous data, odds ratio was used. For continuous data that used the same scale the weighted mean difference was used, and when the continuous data was from differing scales, the standardised mean difference was used.ResultsThe literature search identified 29 RCTs that met the review inclusion criteria of which 10 were exclude as a result of the critical appraisal. RCTs were grouped into two categories: 1) Hospital Patients when study participants were resting during the music intervention, and 2) Procedure Patients when study participants were undergoing and unpleasant or invasive procedure during the music intervention. Studies were then categorised according to specific Sub-groups including peri-operative, cancer patients and patients post myocardial infarction.1.Hospital PatientsBased on the findings of this review, the use of music in Hospital Patients will:•reduce the anxiety of patients, •produce a small reduction in the respiratory rate, and•improve the mood of patients.Additionally, music does not have any impact on patients’ heart rate or systolic blood pressure.2.Procedure PatientsBased on the findings of this review, the use of music during unpleasant procedures does not have any impact on:•patient anxiety.•heart rate or systolic blood pressure•the rating of the severity of pain3.Sub-GroupsThere is very little evidence related to the use of music for specific patients populations." @default.
