- W1521891640 abstract "In this note, we present preliminary results of a research activity concerning the measurement of fibres orientation distribution in inj ection moulded short fibre reinforced polymer composites. The proposed measure is based on the Mean Intercept Length (MIL) parameter, commonly used in biomechanics, obtained from the analysis of three-dimensional images acquired by synchrotron light tomography. The digital reconstruction of the three-dimensional image from a series of X -ray slices allows for visuali zing the spatial distribution of reinforcing fibres, separating them from the polymer matrix. The results presented herein refer to a sample of a 30% by weight glass fibre reinforced polyamide 6, extracted form a thin plate. The plate had been inj ection mou lded and presented the typical layered structure, with fibres preferentially aligned to the melt polymer flow direction in the shell layers, located close to the upper and lower plate surface, and perpendicular to it in the core layer. MIL parameter values provided an estimate of the degree of anisotropy of the material and allowed to capture the differences in fibre orientation observed in the shell and core layers. 1.
