A fire flares up and all the good intentions voiced at the annual Holi-Eid get-togethers organized by the two communities and all the good work done by the various anti communalism fronts go up in a puff of smoke. The rampaging goes on for a few days. Armed with acid, knives, bamboo poles and sticks, a gun or country-made pistol or two, these goons target a few individuals, or a stray woman, or a shop. Fates are decided instantaneously: justice is prompt and delivered on the spot. Rumours run thick and wild in Kasimpura: 'Two thousand Hindus are going to attack us tonight,' says one. And the boys from the mohulla begin to pile bricks and stones on their rooftops. 'Today the police burnt Master Rahmat Ali's house,' says another. 'Lies! All lies!' someone replies. 'Lies? What rubbish! Ghafoor was there; he saw everything with his own eyes.' 'That is the trouble, mzan,' is the answer, 'even the police is with them. Otherwise, believe me, we would have straightened out these dhoti-wearers in one hour. But how does one fight the sartor?' Kasimpura, Nawabganj, Rahmatabad—all of them have a hundred per cent Muslim population. Yet Hindus are the majority in the rest of the city. What if they were to attack?
