- W1522798466 abstract "In the records of the various councils and royal secretariats in Madrid, each state is always called by its ancient and original title: the Duchy of Milan, the Kingdom of Naples, the Kingdom of Sicily, the Kingdom of Sardinia. This chapter presents a typology of the human settlements within a territory that is, to show how people occupied space and to describe the stable forms that this occupation assumed. The quantitative dimension is surely significant here, expressed as the variation through time of the human influx into the cities and the countryside and as the composition of the agglomerations of houses. What author proposes to do instead is to reflect on the social composition of those societies and their internal stratification in both the urban and the rural context. The chapter provides a nuanced introduction to settlement patterns and society in the three formal Spanish states within the Council of Italy. Keywords: Duchy of Milan; human settlements; Kingdom of Naples; Kingdom of Sardinia; Kingdom of Sicily; Spanish Italy; stratification" @default.
