- W1523225898 abstract "The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of sandbars that could form at the mouth of coastal estuaries on flooding behaviour of their floodplains. The study uses Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks as case studies. It uses two alternative flood modelling approaches, namely, a hydraulic model and a coupled hydraulic-sediment transport model, and shows the consequences of using fixed bed river that is implicitly assumed in hydraulic modelling on the flooding behaviour of these creeks. Computer simulations demonstrate that if not dredged every year, peak flood levels in these creeks could significantly rise (up to 40-50cm) in the lower reaches if a 100 year ARI flood was to occur during low tide condition. If the mouths of these creeks were not dredged for a longer period, higher sandbars (0 to 2m) would have a further increased impact on flood levels in the lower reaches. This study shows that ignoring the presence of the sand bars and assuming that they will be washed away during the flood can result in substantially erroneous flood impact assessments. Equally, including the sandbars in a hydrodynamic model but not allowing its erosion can be erroneous. The study highlights the need for coupled hydraulic and sediment transport modelling at the coastal estuaries where bar building activities are dominant." @default.
