- W1524442854 abstract "Early studies of lakes focused on specific topics such as lake-basin measurements or presence and abundance of specific kinds of organisms. In the late nineteenth century, Alphonse Forel introduced comprehensive studies through his work on Lake Geneva. In the same era, Stephen Forbes proposed studying the entire biotic-abiotic system that comprises a lake, now recognized as an ecosystem. This fundamentally new concept, though illustrated for a lake, is now applied to all of Earth's ecosystem types, and is the basis for modern limnology. The ecosystem concept yields scientific understanding at a level that cannot be achieved solely through the study of individual ecosystem components. Metabolic studies allow quantification of the total amount of organic synthesis, the relative importance of organic matter generated in an aquatic ecosystem as compared with organic matter coming from the watershed and atmosphere, and the degree to which organic matter is mineralized through catabolic processes. Studies of food webs, which are based on analysis of energy flow between groups of organisms at different feeding levels, lead to a mechanistic understanding of factors controlling the abundance and production of organisms at any given feeding level. Processes involving transport, storage, and biotic use of elements in lake ecosystems are analyzed successfully through biogeochemical studies, which allow aquatic ecosystems to be compared functionally. The spatial arrangement of organisms within lakes can be understood through analysis of abiotic factors such as light exposure, substrate conditions, or dissolved oxygen. When used together, these integrative approaches to the study of aquatic ecosystems support explanations of differences among aquatic ecosystems and predictions of their response to human actions or other disturbances." @default.
