- W1524671435 abstract "Publisher Summary Rotaviruses (RVs) are ubiquitous and virtually 100% of the adult population has antibody to RV. Understanding RV infection and immunity in humans is important, but studies in humans are difficult because of the inability to control for many experimental variables, such as prior exposure to the virus. As an alternative, animal model systems of RV infection have been developed and have provided key insights in the understanding of the infection, pathogenesis, and immunity of both human and animal RVs. Seven models in four large (cow, pig, horse, and sheep) and three small laboratory (rabbit, mouse, and rat) animal species have been used to define parameters of RV infection, pathology, disease, immune response or test vaccine efficacy. This chapter describes the rat model of RV infection. The rat model of RV infection was only fully developed recently in spite of the ideal size of the rat intestine for physiological studies including Ussing chamber analysis, the well-established physiology of the gastrointestinal tract of rats, and the cost effectiveness of the use of rats to perform RV experiments. The developed rat model of RV infection is unique among the small animal models because it allows human RV infections to be analyzed." @default.
