- W1526075875 abstract "Silicon and sulfur, with much higher capacities than current electrode materials, are promising candidates for next-generation high-energy lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Paper and textile, with flexibility and low cost, have unique advantages as substrates for electrochemical energy storage devices. All of these materials, in their pure form, have intrinsic limitations, which can be complemented by forming composites with nanocarbon. This chapter surveys nanocarbon hybrids with silicon, sulfur, or paper/textile for high-energy LIBs. For instance, silicon's volume expansion can be internally accommodated inside hollow carbon shell, creating a stable interface with electrolyte; sulfur's dissolution can be suppressed by packing it in hollow carbon nanofibers; paper and textile's electrical conductivity can be enhanced by the addition of graphene or carbon nanotubes. Innovative design, together with fundamental understanding of properties, has generated and will generate more novel hybrid materials to address the grand energy challenge." @default.
