- W1527248082 abstract "The existence of experimental data bearing on various dynamical effects of defect atoms in real, three-dimensional crystals provides the theoretician with a body of facts against which he can compare the predictions of his theories. It is already becoming clear that in most theoretical studies of the effects of defects on lattice vibrations, which have as their aim not only a qualitative but also a quantitative understanding of these effects, one must abandon simple models of the host lattice and of the defect and must come to grips with the difficulties which arise from the use of realistic models of crystals and of defects. The use of linear chain models of crystals, or of simple cubic crystals with nearest-neighbor interactions, no longer has any place in defect calculations which make any claim to quantitative accuracy. However, the use of more realistic models of the host crystal alone may not be sufficient to achieve agreement with experiment, even for the frequency of a localized vibration mode, which remains one of the simplest calculations of a defect property which can be performed. This chapter shows that more sophisticated models of the impurity atom than that which represents it simply as a particle whose mass differs from that of the atom it replaces seem to be required in many cases. This is not to say that simple models of crystals and of defects no longer have a place in the theory of the vibrations of imperfect crystals. There will be a place for such models as long as there is a place for qualitative and semi-quantitative arguments in any theory. However, the challenge presented to the theoretician by the growing body of experimental information about vibrational properties of defects in crystals must be met, if the theory of defect atom vibrations is to be more than a rather elegant mathematical exercise." @default.
