- W1527315819 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses pore formation and control in carbon materials. All carbon materials, except highly-oriented graphite, contain pores, because they are polycrystalline and result from the thermal decomposition of organic precursors. During pyrolysis and carbonization, a large amount of decomposition gases is formed over a wide range of temperatures, which depends strongly on the precursors. Based on their origin, the pores can be classified into two classes, intra-particle and interparticle pores. The intra-particle pores are classified into two, intrinsic and extrinsic intra-particle pores. The former class owes its origin to the crystal structure, of which pores in zeolite crystals are an archetypal example. The graphite gallery between neighboring hexagonal carbon layers can behave as slit-shape pores with a width of 0.3345 nm, which can accept various atoms, ions and even molecules (intercalation). Therefore, graphite gallery is an intrinsic intraparticle pore for intercalation. A classification of pores based on pore sizes was proposed by the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Pores can also be classified on the basis of their state, either open or closed." @default.
