- W1527844141 abstract "The sterilization techniques of laparoscopy, and to a slightly lesser degree, of mini-laparotomy are recommended. Laparoscopy is easier, less painful, and associated with fewer complications than mini-laparotomy; however, if the physician does not have adequate equipment or sufficient experience, mini-laparotomy is a better choice. Occlusion techniques which can be used in mini-laparotomy include cutting the tubes, cutting and typing the tubes, tying the tubes without cutting, or clipping the tubes. Occlusion in laparoscopy can be accomplished either by coagulation, clipping, or ringing. Coagulation tends to destroy more of the tube than some of the other occlusion techniques. The use of plastic or metal clips rather than rings is also preferred since the clips tend to cause less tubal damage and are easier to use than the rings. There is some evidence that sterilizedwomen are more likely to subsequently have hysterectomies than nonsterilized women. Some investigators claim that sterilized women tend to request hysterectomies because they frequently experience menorrhagia after sterilization; however, most studies have failed to support an association between sterilization and menorrhagia. Sterilized women may experience changes in menstrual rhythm and this may prompt them to request hysterectomies more frequently than nonsterilized women. Women should not make sterilization decisons when they are pregnant, and sterilization should not be performed until 6 weeks after delivery. Failure rates tend to be higher for sterilizations performed immediately after abortion or cesarean section." @default.
