Knowledge of snow depth and snow water equivalent (SWE, the amount of water stored within the snowpack) spatial distribution and temporal evolution is, therefore, critical for hydrological, climatological and water management applications. This chapter presents the remote sensing techniques for estimating snow depth and SWE from both spaceborne and airborne measurements. It discusses the photogrammetry and light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based approaches, followed by techniques based on gamma radiation. The estimation of SWE at large spatial scales is possible, using gravity data collected by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites. The chapter focuses on the use of spaceborne gravimetry for estimating the water storage at global scale. It describes and reports the techniques that utilize both passive and active microwave data." @default.
