- W1528200026 abstract "Despite the wealth of researchable topics in maternal and child health, it is rare for studies in this field to be carried out by nurse-midwives. This article explores the historical origins of nursing, its educational characteristics and its dominance by women, identifying obstacles to independent research and pointing to ways of overcoming them.Research intimidates nurses because of the monopoly of physicians in this area accounting for the slow development of nursing and midwifery research. In African countries midwives and nurses often collect the data (most not even informed about the objective), while doctors publish the findings. Midwifery graduates must have a demonstrated ability to collect, present, and interpret simple research data, and nurses and midwives ought to publish their findings. The role of nurses is not only nurturing, caring, and comforting, but participating in research, the modern midwife must have humanitarian qualities and a scientific turn of mind. Although the life of Florence Nightingale can serve as an example, she made a mistake by basing nursing preparatory programs in schools of nursing located in hospitals and not in institutions of higher learning, thus isolating nurses from other professionals. A second constraint is women's subordination to men and by assigning subservient roles to nurses and midwives they have to take physician's orders. Some nurses are unduly concerned that a nurse's academic competence could harm her work performance. Unfortunately, no university in Nigeria offers a graduate program in nursing, thus no master's or doctoral dissertations are prepared in this field. There is poor utilization of nursing and midwifery graduates, and poor reading habits and lack of journals. The existing situation can be only improved by blending clinical experience and current knowledge." @default.
