- W1528272214 abstract "This chapter reviews results on several species of cooperatively breeding birds and mammals. Most of the data on the likely function of and the ecological variables affecting cooperative breeding come from field studies on birds, while most of the information on the behavioral and physiological mechanisms that underlie cooperative parental care come from studies of mammals, particularly the dwarf mongoose, and marmosets and tamarins, small nonhuman primates from South America. The chapter focuses on studies on infant care by nonreproductive helpers in both mammals and birds to describe the type of help that helpers provide and to evaluate whether helpers improve the survival of the infants they helped. In cooperatively breeding birds, the significance of helpers for infant survival ranges greatly from no benefit to extreme importance. In some species, the costs of providing care appear to be greater than any benefits received either directly or through inclusive fitness. The best data for the benefits to helpers are found in threatened or endangered species with highly limited breeding sites. The behavioral and physiological mechanisms that lead to helping are examined and the effect of helping on the reproductive success of helpers is evaluated. The mechanisms leading to the reproductive inhibition of helpers are examined." @default.
