- W1528337201 abstract "This chapter investigates the interaction of hydrogen and of methane with the thoroughly dehydrated surface of CaO using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to compare the results with those observed on MgO. The chapter investigates the effects of both the increase of basicity passing from MgO to CaO and the existence of peculiar features of this latter oxide not observed for MgO and not simply amenable to the different basicity. Various probe molecules are used to verify this second point. EPR was used as the high sensitivity of the technique allows monitoring even tiny amounts of paramagnetic species. Calcium oxide after activation does not exhibit any EPR signal except for the weak sextet of Mn2+ always found in such an oxide and related to a uniform doping by traces of Mn2+. UV irradiation of the solid in the presence of H2 produces a pale blue powder and, simultaneously, the EPR spectrum can be observed. The signal and the coloring are both due to the formation of surface trapped electron centers." @default.
