- W1528779531 abstract "Genetic analysis is another powerful tool for resolution of the different natural resistance systems operating in vivo. Using tumor growth rate as the assay, net retardation of tumor growth may depend not only on a variety of nonadaptive defense mechanisms but also on classical immune responses. It is often assumed that NK activity is the in vitro counterpart of natural resistance against normal or transformed cells of the hemopoietic system. NK activity is independent of H-2 nonidentity between the effector and target cells, although the H-2 haplotype of the effector can influence the level of activity expressed. In a study described in the chapter, the H-2k homozygous mice had fewer tumor cells in their spleens and lungs than did the H-2k/d heterozygotes. Even in H-2 associated natural resistance, tumor survival in the lung may give an indication of host NK levels. Several mutations that affect the immune system have been shown to influence NK activity in vitro. Mice homozygous for motheaten have been shown to be deficient in NK cells. On closer genetic analysis, it is clear that in vivo resistance is not simply a reflection of in vitro NK activity." @default.
