- W1528992848 abstract "The high incidence of cartilage and bone in tumors of the mammary glands of dogs as contrasted with humans has been noted. This study was to trace the genesis of cartilage and bone in these tumors and isolate those factors peculiar to the dog. 4 mammary tumors from dogs 1 from a woman and 5 cases of gelatinous carcinoma of humans were analyzed. 2 dog tumors were diagnosed as myxochondroadenocarcinoma and represented an adenocarcinoma with foci of transformation of epithelial cells into myxomatous tissue and cartilage. The mucoid fluid was replaced by collagenous tissue. Transition stages paralleled that observed in developing epiphyseal cartilage. The 3rd dog tumor composed principally of hyaline cartilage and osteoid tissue was diagnosed as osteochondrosarcoma. The 4th dog tumor contained bony trabecula in stroma. It was diagnosed as chondroadenocarcinoma with stromal chondrification and ossification interpreted as an adenocarcinoma with cartilage derived from epithelium as well as from stroma. Also bone was apparently formed by direct ossification of the stroma. The human tumor was from a patient aged 28 with 2 children the last born 1 year earlier. A tumor mass had been noted in her breast for 2 1/2 years; it increased rapidly in size the month prior to admission. The breast was removed by radical resection. An encapsulated globular cystic tumor had replaced most of the parenchyma. The cysts were filled with gelatinous fluid linings were papillomatous and collagenous tissue composed most of the sections. The tumor was diagnosed as a fibromyxochondrosarcoma with the fibrocartilage coming directly from mature collagenous tissue. The theory that these tumors result from embryonic rests is not considered probable. Local or autochthonous development with transformation of epithelium 1st to the transitional stage of myxomatous tissue and then to cartilage seems to have occurred. If a cell is sufficiently immature it possesses a plasticity which allows it to be molded by physical chemical or other factors; this concept may be applied to these so-called mixed tumors. Details seem to indicate possible transformation of mucoid fibrinous or protein fluids into collagen a principal organic constituent of the matrix of cartilage and bone. More frequent trauma to breasts of dogs is considered to be a factor in development of these tumors. Mixed tumors of the salivary glands are considered of similar origin." @default.
