- W1529362009 abstract "Idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, involve most frequently the terminal ileum and colon. An important component of the normal colon that serves to maintain its integrity is the dense layer of glycoproteins that coats the colonic surface. Structural changes of colonic mucin glycoproteins in association with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease have been demonstrated using a broad range of approaches including chromatographic separation based on size or ionic charge, biochemical structural analyses, immunological and histochemical assays. In addition to changes in the glycan structures of glycoproteins in the colonic mucus, structural changes were also detected in serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) from patients with inflammatory bowel disease. These changes are characterized by an increased proportion of IgG structures lacking D-galactose (Gal) [l l-13]. This abnormality was more frequently detected in Crohn's disease than in ulcerative colitis. Furthermore, while the Gal deficiency of IgG was found to be proportional with the severity of disease in Crohn's disease, no such relationship was detected in ulcerative colitis." @default.
