Ultrastructurally all granules and products of their transformation are divided into five kinds, which seem to be related to the release of peptide neurohormones and monoamines. A morphometric method was proposed to estimate functional states of the median eminence. The following parameters were calculated: (1) the percentage of different nerve terminals and of various kinds of granules they contain; (2) the total concentration of granules in nerve terminals of different types. Since the percentage of different nerve terminals and of various kinds of granules in the external zone of the median eminence and in its perivascular zone are equal, the estimation of the above-mentioned values as well as the total concentration of granules in the perivascular zone only suffices for the analysis of the functional states of the median eminence. The total concentration of granules constitutes the most precise value in this respect. The cells of origin for different nerve terminals in the external zone of the median eminence of Rana temporaria are discussed." @default.
