- W1529474441 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the processes of developing neurons (PCD). The classical view of PCD during development and disease has been that the loss of neurons begins in the cell body, with activation of the classic caspase dependent apoptosis machinery. The death of the axons, dendrites, and synapses is regarded as a secondary consequence of the dying cell body. The fact that the loss of axons, dendrites, and synapses is now shown to be controlled by specific and locally acting mechanisms, which are independent of PCD at the cell body, raises key questions about how the neurons die. The most obvious possibility is that the death of the neurons can be triggered by the events at the periphery, such that signaling events at the synapse could initiate withdrawal of the synapse and trigger a controlled and progressive death of the axon by either degeneration or resorption. Thus, rather than being triggered by events in the cell body, the neurons could die from distal to proximal and might be coupled with a retrograde signal, which is relayed to the nucleus to trigger a PCD at the soma. In all those circumstances where degeneration of the processes is involved, this requires the removal of large amounts of cytoplasm. It has been recognized that degradation of large amounts of cytoplasm involves autophagic and proteasomal pathways." @default.
