This chapter focuses on analysis of the pair distribution function (PDF). The PDF can be obtained from diffraction data on crystalline powders, but it can equally well be produced from the diffraction patterns of amorphous materials. Most PDF beam lines at synchrotron facilities use a primary radiation of 60–100 keV and a large area detector to allow fast data collection. For data collected with X-rays, the main background contribution is Compton scattering, which needs to be corrected accordingly. The chapter guides the reader through the steps required to develop an initial model based on the PDF observations and add further details to improve the refinement. Several complementary techniques exist that are suitable for investigating the local structures of materials. A very brief overview is presented in the chapter." @default.
