- W1531848949 abstract "This chapter illustrates the possible effects that sorption has on the biodegradation of selected ionizable organic compounds sorbed to single, pure mineral phases. The effects of sorption on degradation kinetics are related to mechanisms of sorption. The chapter discusses the availability of sorbed compounds, organic cation sorption/degradation, and the organic acid sorption/degradation. Reactions of particular interest that are discussed are cation exchange of organic bases to clay minerals and surface complexation of several organic acids to γ-Al2O3. In an attempt to isolate the desorption process from the degradation process, fluorescence spectroscopy was used in studies with the organic bases quinoline and 2-hydroxyquinoline sorbed to hectorite and with salicylic acid in the presence of γ-Al2O3. The use of fluorescence spectroscopy as a tool to isolate desorption processes from biodegradation processes is discussed, as is the use of this technique in conjunction with 14CO2 evolution studies." @default.
