- W1533047841 abstract "During the 1980s, the use of Ritalin and other prescription drugs in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) more than doubled (National Education Association, 1989; 750,000, 1988; Borr, 1988). Recently it has been estimated that nearly a million children are taking stimulant drugs. The use of medication as the sole treatment for ADHD has been shown to be limited. Although stimulants such as Ritalin calm the child and improve concentration, there is little, if any, evidence to indicate that they alone improve academic performance, social adjustment, or self-esteem (Byrd & Byrd, 1986; McGuiness, 1985; Henker & Whalen, 1989). Moreover, The Physician's Desk Reference clearly states that stimulant medication should only be used as an integral part of a total treatment program and that appropriate educational placement is essential and psycho-social intervention is generally necessary with ADHD children. (Medical Economics, 1989). Unfortunately, ADHD is presently not recognized as a separate handicapping condition under Public Law 94-142, the Education of All Handicapped Children Act. Thus, even though it is estimated that 3% to 5% of the children in this country are afflicted with ADHD, many of these youngsters are simply being treated with stimulants alone or are receiving no help at all. In other words, many ADHD youngsters are not getting the educational, psychological, and social assistance needed for a total treatment program. This is a sad commentary, because the research shows that the future of undertreated and untreated ADHD children is at great risk (McGuiness, 1985; Parker, 1990)." @default.
