A consistent thermodynamic approach is presented in the chapter to study the structural and energetic heterogeneity of adsorbents. In this approach, the adsorption potential distribution, which provides information about changes in the Gibbs free energy for a given system, is a key thermodynamic function. This distribution can be used to calculate the differential enthalpy, differential entropy, and heat of immersion. It can also be converted to the pore size distribution. Carbonaceous materials—such as porous carbons and nonporous carbons—are a non-graphitic form of carbon characterized by internal surface areas. The surface and structural properties of nanoporous solids can be studied directly by employing modern techniques, such as atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray analysis, and various spectroscopic methods suitable for materials characterization and surface imaging." @default.
