- W1533173840 abstract "That plant chemistry (nutrients and allelochemicals) is one of the most im portant determinants of the suitability of plant tissues to phytophagous insects is now widely accepted. It directly affects all of the performance characteristics typically associated with insect fitness, viz., survival, growth, development and reproduction. Knowledge of the differential susceptibility of insects to plant chem istry has proved invaluable to our understanding of insect ecology and evolution. The explanatory power of a primarily chemocentric view of plant-insect interactions has been limited, however, by a paucity of information on insect counter-adaptations. Prominent among such adaptations is enzymatic detoxica tion. Numerous arguments have been advanced in the ecological literature about the functions, costs, efficiencies and evolution of insect detoxication systems vis ? vis plant allelochemicals. But only recently have studies begun to appear that clearly demonstrate the importance of enzymatic detoxication to the dynamics of plant-insect interactions. This paper will address the roles of both plant chemistry and insect biochemistry in mediating interactions between Populus species, especially aspens, and Populus feeding Lepidoptera. My purpose is twofold: 1) to review recent research on the chemical and biochemical components of such interactions, and 2) to demonstrate the value of linking phytochemical and biochemical studies in studies of plant insect interactions." @default.
