- W1533541710 abstract "ID: 235 Variation in Pediatric Gastroenteritis Admissions among Florida Counties, 1995-2002 Author Information: Authors List: Presenting Author: Jean Lee Presenting Author: Jean Lee Address: 7200 66th Street North Pinellas Park, Florida 33781 USA Ph: 727-341-3780 Fax: Email: Lee.Jean@spcollege.edu Institution: St. Petersburg College Abstract InformationInformation Presentation Preference: SNRS Poster Presentation Abstract Categories: Interest Group: Community/Public Health Thematic Areas: Child & Adolescent Health Introduction: Background & Significance: Hospitalizations for pediatric gastroenteritis are considered potentially avoidable and are used to monitor access and quality of primary care for children. In 2001, the number of pediatric gastroenteritis admissions was higher in Florida compared to the average rate in the South and nationally. Method(s): Purpose: The purpose was to explore variation in county admission rates for pediatric gastroenteritis in Florida during 1995-2002. Specific aims included identifying the contributions of county socioeconomic characteristics and availability of primary care resource. Hypotheses: County admission rates are positively associated with the proportion of the child population from racial/ethnic minority groups, the proportion of the child population in poverty, and county hospital supply. County admission rates are negatively associated with median household income, the pediatric-serving, primary care physician supply, the federally-funded clinic supply, and the managed care penetration. County admission rates are associated with county rural-urban level. Methods: A retrospective and longitudinal analysis was performed to assess variation in annual county admission rates for pediatric gastroenteritis from 1995-2002. Secondary data sources included Florida hospital discharge data and multiple publicly available state and federal datasets. Independent variables included county-level measures of socioeconomic status and primary healthcare resources. Multivariate analysis was performed using multilevel modeling techniques to account for variation over years and across counties. Results: Findings: The average pediatric gastroenteritis admission rate across all occasions and counties was 205.7 admissions per 100,000 child population. The proportion of children 0-4 years in a county was the only significant predictor of the pediatric gastroenteritis rate. Discussion: Discussion: The significant effect of age on admission rate emphasizes the importance of access to primary care for very young children to prevent potentially avoidable hospitalizations.
