- W1535518302 abstract "This paper is to brief the development process and some distinctions of Korean church’s worship service. The Korean Church has her own worship tradition cultivated through unique circumstances and experiences. In order to understand this process, an individual needs to contemplate on the influences of Western worship traditions mainly from England and America, the missional strategies of foreign missionaries in Korea, bygones and situations which the Korean believers experienced, and the unique cultural environments of Korea, etc. Before the arrival of the foreign missionaries, there had been Christian communities that had the same worship form of the Manchurian Church and distinctively led by lay members. Then there was the tradition introduced by the American missionaries who were mostly nurtured with Puritanism and had experienced Revivalism. The Presbyterian Church of US then was in the middle of a conflict between the Old School and the New School of worship, thus delivering both traditions to Korea as they are. Another factor that needs thorough study is the formation process of the Korean Presbyterian worship. The first Presbyterian missionaries in Korea adopted the Nevius missional plan and it had great impact on various aspects like missionary methodology, various forms of worship, meetings and conferences. The Presbyterian worship took a new turn in 1907 when the first Korean pastors were ordained. Soon, various forms of corporate prayer like early-morning prayer meeting, open united prayer during worship, mountain-top prayer and all-night prayer meeting appeared and took root. The first Korean pastors strived to recover well-organized traditional forms of worship service rather than maintaining the status quo. These attempts, however, were not so fruitful, because the simple order of worship that was established through Nevius plan became a long tradition of Korean Church. The Church experienced significant events in the late 1960s, due to the advancement of Pentecostalism, and enjoyed a revival. With the help of the revival, the churches became affluent in the 1980s and encountered an era of Romanticism in worship. The churches emphasized aesthetic qualities, installed and played pipe organs, brought Gothic church buildings, included stained glass, and used religious images. Also the so-called Open Worship movement appeared in the late 1980s. Borrowed from the American Churches like Willow Creek Community Church, the Open Worship, which started at Onnuri Church, responded positively to the needs and requirements of the mass and began a consumer-directed worship style. This style seems to be transforming into Emerging Worship nowadays. 21st century is the new turning point for the Korean Church worship. Most of the denominations publish their unique new liturgy books. These various codes would lead beyond each denomination’s peculiarity and show possible recovery of the common essences of the primitive worship, or the danger of liturgical and spiritual ‘mixism.’" @default.
