- W1535736265 abstract "Cell death is a life-long companion for any cell and molecular processes evolved in order to deal with life-threatening situations like starvation or poisoning. It is also known that in metazoa different pathways exist by which a cell undergoes suicide for the benefit of the whole organism, collectively known as apoptosis. Although protozoa generally lack caspases, a formerly thought indispensable prerequisite for apoptosis, an inducible caspase-independent form of apoptosis as a mechanism of cell density regulation has been described in African trypanosomes. Here, we review the current status of cell death mechanisms in Trypanosoma brucei including necrosis, autophagy, and apoptosis. We will discuss which of these events are necessary to cope with stressful situations, and which are probably needed to ensure continuance of infection and transmittance to the insect vector. Since autophagy and apoptosis are essential for the parasite's survival, we will also discuss possible pathway junctions suitable for drug development." @default.
