- W1536635650 abstract "The structure of the preganglionic end fibers and the synapses in the superior cervical ganglion of the cat has been studied by means of serial sections. The preganglionic end fibers usually have a diameter of about 0.1–0.3 μ. Along their paths they exhibit widened portions at which they establish synaptic contacts with the postganglionic neurons. The great majority of the synapses are axodendritic; a few axosomatic synapses have also been observed. The preganglionic fibers usually run parallel to or wind around the dendrites and establish synaptic contacts with the dendrites at several points. The most common organelles of the fibers are small vesicles, about 300–500 Å in diameter, vesicles with a dense core about 700–1000 Å in size, highly opaque granules about 0.2–0.4 μ large, and mitochondria. These structures are usually concentrated in the presynaptic widenings. The fibers also contain filamentous structures. The specialized zones of the pre- and postsynaptic membranes have a triple-layered asymmetric structure. The components of the synaptic membranes are continuous with the corresponding components of the plasma membranes. Some of the small vesicles of the preganglionic widening are always in close association with the presynaptic membrane. Highly dense material of varying thickness is associated with the cytoplasmic surface of the postsynaptic membrane. The interspace between the synaptic membranes, which is about 60–80 Å wide, contains stained material showing alternating light and dense regions." @default.
