- W1536700472 abstract "The purpose of this study was to determine if total resistance training volume (RTvol) could predict functional outcome (Physical Demand Level; PDL) following a sports performance based rehabilitation program in workers’ compensation lumbar fusion patients (n=63). Exercise volume was calculated as: Volume = Weight X Sets X Repetitions. RTvol was calculated as the average daily training volume during the first and last week of the program. PDL was measured at program completion. PDL was classified by occasional occupational lifting requirements: LIGHT (L; 20lbs), LIGHT-MEDIUM (LM; 35lbs), MEDIUM (M; 50 lbs), MEDIUM-HEAVY (MH; 75lbs), HEAVY (H; 100lbs), VERY HEAVY (VH; >100lbs). A one-way ANOVA was used to analyze relationships between PDL and RTvol Fisher’s Exact Test was used for post-hoc analysis. Pooled comparisons were analyzed by a Student’s t-test. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. Data are presented as mean±SD. PDLs achieved at program completion were L=1, LM=1, M=11, MH=25, H=7, VH=20. For statistical analysis of the relationship between RTvol and PDL the L and LM PDL patients were eliminated. RTvol did not vary by PDL at program beginning. RTvol increased during the program in all patients (p<0.0001). RTvol varied significantly between groups (p=0.0045). These differences did not exist between all groups, so M/MH and H/VH groups were pooled (M/MH, n=36; H/VH, n=27). Significant differences existed in RTvol between M/MH and H/VH groups (31593±8881lbs/day vs. 40602±10546lbs/day (p=0.0008). These results suggest that RTvol and can predict PDL following a rehabilitation program." @default.
