- W153674393 abstract "The study and understanding of adenohypophyseal (anterior pituitary) function has evolved primarily during the twentieth century. While biblical references indicate that the various authors were aware of some endocrinologic syndromes [(“some eunuchs which were so born from their mother’s womb,” Matthew 19:12) and (“his breasts are full of milk,”Job 21:24)] and that they may have been aware of the source of some of the hormones (“He that is wounded in the stones... shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord,”Deuteronomy 23:1), the early framework for the study of adenohypophysis-peripheral gland relationships did not occur until the nineteenth century. In 1838 Rathke observed that the anterior pituitary arose from an invagination of the roof of the stomodeum and migrated in the early embryologic period to coalesce with the neurohypophysis, which evaginated from the diencephalon. He concluded that the adenohypophysis was not of neural origin (1). By the mid-nineteenth century it had been demonstrated that the hormonal activity of the testes was not stimulated by its own nerve supply, but rather was maintained by an intact vasculature. However, it was not until the twentieth century that the pituitary-testicular axis was further defined." @default.
