- W1537388464 abstract "We examine the performance of an adaptive mesh moving and local refinement procedure for the finite difference solution of one-dimensional hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. Mesh motion is designed to isolate spatially distinct phenomena while recursive refinement of the space-time cells is performed in regions where an indicator exceeds a prescribed tolerance. These adaptive procedures are implemented with a MacCormack scheme, Davis's artificial viscosity, and a discretization error estimate based on Richardson's extrapolation. Computational results indicate that local refinement can provide reliable solutions at much lower cost than possible on uniform meshes; that mesh motion can be used to improve upon uniform mesh solutions for a modest effort; that the cost of managing the tree data structure associated with refinement is small; and that a combination of mesh motion and refinement reliably produces solutions for the least cost per unit of accuracy.Given the need to solve problems of increasing complexity, we describe adaptive techniques for solving two-dimensional hyperbolic systems on shared-memory computers. The differential system is approximated by a finite element discontinuous Galerkin technique with a hierarchical Legendre piecewise polynomial basis for the spatial discretization and solved by a recursive local mesh refinement procedure on a tree-structured rectangular grid. Fluxes at element boundaries are computed by solving an approximate Riemann problem, a projection limiter is applied to keep the average solution monotone, time discretization is performed by Runge-Kutta integration, and a p-refinement-based error estimate is used as a refinement indicator. This general algorithm has been implemented for scalar equations and for the Euler equations modeling a perfect inviscid compressible fluid. Procedures that sequentially traverse the tree of grids while processing solutions on each grid in parallel; that process solutions at the same tree level in parallel; and that dynamically assign processors to elements have been developed. Experimental results indicate that the dynamic load-balancing scheme of assigning element computations at a given tree level to processors as they become available provide the best parallel performance; however, static load-balancing strategies offer a viable alternative and may perform better on hierarchical-memory computers." @default.
