The most popular binding motifs currently being used to prepare Hg(II) detectors are those containing N-functionalized groups as well as different types of N-heterocyclic systems and aza- and polyaza-macrocyclic frameworks. The chapter reviews the highlights of these molecules in the following order: nitrogen acyclic receptors, nitrogen heterocyclic receptors, and aza-macrocyclic-based receptors. It describes the work performed on the design of Hg(II) sensors based on molecular nanostructured materials. There are several examples of probes that employ nanostructured materials as mercury (II) responsive elements. These approaches are based on functionalized nanoparticles, nanoporous materials, and nanostructured membranes or films acting themselves as the Hg(II) probes or the media that support the mercury-responsive units." @default.
