- W1538205003 abstract "Block 16/1 is located on the western margin of the Utsira High in the Norwegian northern North Sea. A detailed study of the Paleogene succession has been made in this area. Control of the relative ages of the Tertiary sandstones was achieved by a detailed biostratigraphic framework and a sequence stratigraphic log correlation of eleven wells in the area. Local variation in paleotopography controlled the distribution of the submarine sands in Paleocene time. The depositional basin was divided by a local northwest-southeast-trending horst in the licence area. Sediment input was mainly from the north and northwest. Five third-order sequences including the Balder Formation were recorded from well logs in the Paleocene succession. With the exception of the lowermost sequence, which pinches out against the slope of the Utsira High, it was impossible to trace the sequences throughout the entire study area. Generally, a thinning eastwards onto the Utsira High was observed. A progressive infilling of the basin paleotopography during Paleocene and Eocene times resulted in transport of Eocene sands further onto the High. Eastwards thinning was accompanied by a facies transition of sandstones into mudstones on the Utsira High. Three third-order sequences were recorded from well logs in the Eocene succession. The Paleocene and Eocene deposits consist mainly of sandstones and mudstones related to a submarine fan depositional environment. The Shetland Platform was the main source area where tectonic events and variations in relative sea-level caused re-deposition of shelf sediments as high- and low-density turbidity currents. Mounded to undulating reflection patterns in the 16/1 area normally reflect massive sandstones in the investigated wells, whereas parallel, high-amplitude reflections are usually related to mudstones. Channel stacking and incision into underlying sediments is frequently observed in the Eocene section. Due to channelizing, the lateral extension of the sandstones is restricted, and they are poorly defined on the seismic data. Deformed uncompacted clays in the overlying Oligocene unit are responsible for diffraction noise on the seismic sections making the interpretation of the Paleocene and Eocene interval difficult." @default.
