- W153845669 abstract "There are few rigorous studies of the role of source control, or of the relative advantages of differing approaches, for example, the merits of operative versus percutaneous drainage, or of open abdomen approaches in comparison to more conservative kinds of intervention. The reasons for this lack of strong data are numerous, and include the inherent difficulties in standardizing approaches in complex infections, and the relative rarity of the conditions involved. In general, the best approach is that which accomplishes the objectives of drainage, device removal, debridement, and definitive control with the least degree of physiologic risk to the patient. On the other hand, for the patient whose instability arises form uncontrolled infection, intervention as a heroic and life-saving measure should not be withheld. Successful source control usually results in resolution of the clinical manifestations of sepsis; conversely, their persistence or recurrence, or the development of new organ dysfunction, should suggest the need for further intervention and prompt appropriate investigation and therapy." @default.
