Studies have investigated the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of stress in child care centers (Pines and Maslach 1979), and special education settings (Fimian 1983; Meadow 1981; Zabel and Zabel, 1981), as well as in regular education settings (Coates and Thoreson 1976; Kyriacou and Sutcliffe 1978). A typical focus of the research to date has been on the prevalence, sources, and symptoms of stress among professionals (for example, Kyriacou and Sutcliffe 1978). A consensus is emerging that stress is rapidly becoming a most serious problem among educators (Gold 1984; Raschke, Dedrick, Strathe, and Hawkes 1985), with the severity of the problem on the increase (Eskridge and Coker 1985). Typical sources of stress include lack of time for professional responsibilities (Eskridge and Coker 1985; Raschke et al. 1985) and disruptive and nonresponsive students (Raschke et al. 1985). Most professionals in education would acknowledge that educators are subject to at least some degree of stress, though frequency and severity vary among individuals (Fimian 1982). Some investigators have suggested that those educators who experience great degrees of the emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and negative self-evaluation that evolve from stress will experience considerable difficulty in the execution of their professional responsibilities (Fimian) 1982; Freudenberger 1977; Johnson et al. 1981; Zabel and Zabel 1981).
