- W1538936040 abstract "The Botswana Family Health Survey II was conducted to provide information on family planning awareness approval and use basic indicators of maternal and child health and other topics related to family health. The survey data has been used to analyze and evaluate progress in the Maternal and Child Health/Family Planning program since the Botswana Family Health Survey of 1984. A nationally representative sample of 4368 women 15-49 were interviewed in both urban and rural areas between August-December 1988. The new findings show: 1) current fertility rates are 5.0 however data on fertility trends show a decline since 1973 when the family planning program was introduced; 2) a decline in breastfeeding and postpartum abstinence among urban women; 3) 95% of all women know at least 1 modern method of contraception; 4) more than 1/2 of women have used a modern method of contraception and 3 out of 10 women are currently using a contraceptive method to delay or avoid a birth; 5) women who are non-users but do not wish to become pregnant soon report barriers to using family planning but also stated that they do intend to use family planning in the future; 6) while 92% of respondents approved to family planning only 57% thought their partner approved; 7) even though women have a growing interest im birth spacing they continue to prefer having many children (3/4 wanted 4 while 30% wanted 6+); 8) almost 1/2 of the births in the 5 years before the survey were unwanted; while 6 out of 10 first births to teenagers are unwanted; 9) 45% of women in union are in need of family planning; 10) 1/4 of teenagers had had 1 birth and 5% were pregnant with their 1st child at the time of the survey; 11) infant and child mortality rates for the 5-year period preceeding the survey are 37 and 16/1000; 12) 90% of births in the 5-year period preceeding the survey received antenatal care from a physician or nurse; 13) ill children receive appropriate treatment; 14) 9 out of 10 women had heard of AIDS but 1/2 were misinformed." @default.
