- W153893640 abstract "Compiling an index of persons at first sounds like a very mechanical and uninspiring kind of work. But when Professor Martin entrusted me with the task of registering, in close collaboration with Dr Eduard Gerresheim, the names of all persons named or quoted in the twenty-three volumes of the Akademie edition of Kant’s collected works, I made the astonishing experience that names are by no means, as it were, “sounds, signifying nothing!” For the entirety of these names, — whether their bearers be philosophers, poets, friends, pupils or other correspondents, — shows Kant’s whole personal world, and throws light on his public and private spheres of interest. Everything a great man held to be worth mentioning says something about himself; it contributes to the image of his personality. Apart from documenting the range of activities of this author of the three world-famous Critiques, the register of names and quotations also portrays the European scholar of the type of the 18th century in general. The index furthermore discloses at first glance that Kant was anything but a scholar ignorant of the world, that on the contrary he had the most divers social contacts." @default.
