- W1539016721 abstract "Morphological connected filters are operators that simplify an input image while preserving the shapes of the features it contains. A theoretical study has been performed on morphological connected filters and, in particular, on the subclass consisting of filters by reconstruction. A new connected filter has been presented. This new filter (and its dual) forms a novel family of morphological filters (the other families are openings and closings--connected or not--and their sequentially alternating compositions). Certain commutation properties of filters by reconstruction have been presented. The thesis has also approached the theoretical treatment of morphological connected filtering solely through an adjacency requirement. Morphological connected filters can be successfully applied to the image segmentation problem. The flat zone properties of connected filters have been used (a) to provide region markers for watershed methods, or (b) to provide a new flat zone approach that avoids the loss of resolution inherent in region marker methods.Another class of methods that perform a low-level simplification of an image are intra-region smoothing approaches. This thesis has focused on an adaptive smoothing implementation of an anisotropic diffusion process. This approach is limited due mainly to the unequal strength of an image edge along its path. A related technique that solves the main limitations of the adaptive smoothing approach has been presented." @default.
